Bhilar’s transformation into a book village is truly a remarkable initiative.
In Bhilar, 25 spots were selected to become reading hotspots, each categorised into themes like poetry, history, autobiographies, festival specials, biographies, and literature. The selection criteria for these homes included sufficient space for books and necessary furniture, a convenient location near the main road, and the willingness of residents to act as caretakers of the books. Gaon Connection shares more details about visiting Bhilar.

Each library has a different theme, ranging from literature to history. Bhilar, known as the ‘Village of Books,’ was transformed into a literary haven through the initiative of Rajya Marathi Vikas Sanstha and Education Minister Vinod Tawde. On May 4, 2017, Bhilar formally became ‘Pustakanche Gao’ or ‘the village of books’ and opened its doors to the public.
Visitors to Bhilar can easily find these reading spots, thanks to colourful signboards, pamphlets with detailed maps, and thematic artworks that guide them to their preferred genres. Each household in the village maintains a library, creating a unique and immersive experience for book lovers.

At this moment, 15,000 books find a home in Bhilar, all of them in Marathi. Soon, the collection will be expanded to include more Hindi and English books. Also, check for any literary events or book readings happening in the village during your visit.
Enjoy local Maharashtrian cuisine at the village eateries.
